With over 5,500 employees, the University Hospital Düsseldorf (UKD) is one of the largest employers in the Düsseldorf area and treats over 50,000 patients annually. To manage the associated healthcare and administrative workload, the University Hospital Düsseldorf Medical Services GmbH (UKM) was founded as a wholly owned subsidiary of the University Hospital Düsseldorf.

The 450 employees of the service company perform all tasks that fall outside the UKD’s core business. These include project management, mechanical engineering, electrical and communications engineering, medical technology, central sterile supply services, laundry services, archives, security, transportation services, and, above all, IT services.

The beginning of a long partnership

“Two full-time employees are responsible for managing baramundi Endpoint Management. Thanks to the high degree of automation and the use of PXE boot, WoL, and the associated OS deployment, it’s very easy to get 100 endpoints up and running in no time. Thanks to the consistent use of the baramundi Management Suite, our first- and second-level support team—which has remained the same size since 2015—can now provide IT services to over 1,500 additional clients,” said Müller.

The IT department, headed by Phillip Müller as Director of UKM IT, has 39 employees. Its main responsibilities include first- and second-level support, client management, Mobile Device Management, printer management, IT hardware procurement, project management, specialized SAP projects, system administration involving more than 150 virtual servers, and the provision of the electronic archive for patient records at the UKD. Müller and his team manage a total of approximately 7,000 end devices across a total area of approximately 46 hectares, spread across 32 institutes and 28 clinics. This is further supplemented by various branch offices located throughout the city of Düsseldorf and at the Jülich Research Center.

A fundamental building block of the solution: IT management from baramundi

“The deciding factor in our choice of baramundi was the open, honest, and professional presentation—one free of exaggerated or flowery promises. Everyone involved in the selection process has years of IT experience and can quickly tell when promises and reality don’t align. The baramundi Management Suite already offered solutions that met our requirements back in 2014. baramundi impressed us not only during the presentations but also in the follow-up meetings with excellent support, clear communication, and attractive pricing combined with fast, straightforward sales.

“That’s why we’ve been using the baramundi Management Suite since 2015,” explains Müller. “We use the baramundi Management Suite to its fullest extent: software deployment (Deploy), OS installation, Inventory, and baramundi Automation Studio with custom scripts we’ve created to manage our end devices and connected peripherals,” Müller continues.

University hospitals are generally under significant staffing pressure. The first- and second-level support team, which operates a central hotline, consists of only twelve full-time employees and is responsible for managing nearly 7,000 end devices and providing support to 5,500 employees. Without the baramundi Management Suite, managing this enormous volume would be unthinkable, and staffing requirements would exceed 25 full-time employees.

In summary, Müller describes his experience with baramundi as follows:
“We would be delighted if more companies in the IT sector shared similar approaches to customer service, training programs, and support. In this regard, baramundi is the gold standard for us. We encourage all companies to tackle endpoint management with full enthusiasm and to experience the benefits of the baramundi Management Suite for themselves.”
