Inventory und Network Discovery in Detail
Inventory of hardware and software
The baramundi Management Suite allows you to inventory all hardware and software components across one or multiple target systems within your IT architecture — quickly and without disrupting users. It automatically detects software installed on desktops, laptops, and servers, providing a complete and accurate list. All collected data is securely stored in the baramundi database.
Detection Rules
Whether using the standard rule set or custom-defined detection rules, you can nest rules as deeply as needed using operators, comparisons, and checks. You can also customize what type of network device is detected and which values are read. Highly specific rules can, for example, be defined using a PowerShell script.
Visualization
After a network scan, the baramundi Management Suite displays all detected devices clearly in a network topology. Devices can be reorganized into specific subgroups or viewed in the environment view as a so-called network map. This makes connections between devices visible and provides detailed information about each network device.
Capturing energy consumption
Uptime, operating hours, standby, or offline mode: To optimize energy consumption across your network, hardware types (PCs, monitors, printers, etc.) are identified and assigned energy usage values. Based on clear reports, energy policies can be created and automatically applied — individually or by group. This helps reduce energy costs without compromising performance.
Capture via SNMP, ARP and SSH
A quick scan of your network environment instantly displays all network devices as endpoints in the baramundi Management Suite. Following defined IP ranges and SNMP rule sets, Network Devices scans the network for devices supporting SNMP versions 1, 2c, or 3. For endpoints that cannot be identified via SNMP, the network can be scanned using ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) to accurately capture devices in the infrastructure. This identifies connected endpoints by IP and MAC address—regardless of type—for a fast comparison between expected and actual configurations. In addition to SNMP and ARP, OPC UA, Siemens S7Comm, and Secure Shell (SSH) protocols are supported, enabling the inclusion of Linux-based systems and industrial controllers in the inventory.
Linux: Custom Inventory Templates
To better organize devices, Inventory Templates are available, allowing you to capture special cases such as DMZ appliances.
Customize device details and commands
With Network Devices, individual information and variables can be assigned to devices. This allows for spatial or organizational assignments that make management beyond IT much easier. Using custom-defined commands simplifies the administration of network and industrial controllers, enabling immediate action in case of support requests to perform further analysis on the target device.

FAQ: IT Inventory Software
What is Software Inventory?
Software inventory means that all programs installed on devices are centrally collected and documented. This helps keep track of licenses, versions, and installations—an essential part of any IT inventory.
What are the benefits of IT inventory software?
Good IT inventory software saves time, reduces errors, and provides transparency. It automatically detects devices and software on the network, generates reports, and assists with license management—crucial for compliance and IT operational efficiency.
How does automatic network discovery work?
During network discovery, the inventory software scans the network and automatically detects all connected devices—from PCs and servers to network components. This reduces manual effort and reliably maps the network topology.
Why is software inventory important for businesses?
Without a central software inventory, visibility is lost. This can lead to license violations, security gaps, or unnecessary costs. IT inventory provides transparency, enhances security, and optimizes license management.
What information does good IT inventory software provide?
Professional IT inventory software displays device information, operating systems, installed software, license status, network connections, and the complete IT architecture — all centrally accessible and in real time.
How often should IT inventory be conducted?
Ideally, inventory is automated and performed regularly in the background — e.g., daily or weekly. This keeps the IT inventory up to date and prevents security gaps caused by outdated data.
