Medway NHS Foundation Trust:
Healthcare

Medway NHS Foundation Trust
Medway NHS Foundation Trust is a nonprofit organization based in Gillingham, England, and accredited by the British National Health Service. Each year, more than half a million patients are cared for in Medway and Swale. With over 4,000 employees, the trust is one of Medway’s largest employers. In addition, nearly 400 volunteers support the trust through initiatives such as Hospital Radio and the Volunteer Services Department.

“At first, we relied primarily on the tools available from Microsoft to manage our IT—meaning we mainly implemented changes via Group Policy. Support was handled through antivirus system consoles, which allowed us to run scripts remotely. We used free tools like GLPI for inventory management,” explains Andrzej Sikorski.
As the company grew and the number of devices increased, this low-level solution simply became impractical. Above all, the sluggishness of Group Policy was a problem: we didn’t know when—or even if—a process had been successfully completed. The existing solution was therefore far too unreliable for us and, due to the lack of reporting, also too insecure.”
"We are now able to install updates and patches for malware and other vulnerabilities as soon as they arise."

Hospital Technology: Upgrading, Improving, Streamlining, and Managing
A reliable IT infrastructure is essential for saving lives. As more and more devices were being used within the organization, Medway NHS Foundation Trust found it increasingly difficult to manage the vast IT landscape for its more than 4,000 employees.
The institution’s expensive IT resources were largely tied up in outdated spreadsheets, legacy databases, and traditional, time-consuming manual processes for software updates and vulnerability management. This led to disruptive downtime and difficulties in ensuring that all endpoints complied with the latest security policies.
“Software vendors regularly release important security updates and patches,” said Liz Capp-Gray, Director of IT at Medway NHS Foundation Trust. “This meant that hours of tedious work had to be spent on basic but critical endpoint management processes.”
Even with a robust patching plan, the IT department was unable to force devices to reboot, which ultimately led to unexpected downtime and significant disruptions to the hospital’s critical operations.

Harnessing the Power of Automation
To ensure the efficiency of IT operations in a fast-paced environment, Medway NHS Foundation Trust implemented baramundi Deploy (opens in new tab) to schedule device reboots for specific times. This was particularly necessary for critical departments such as the emergency room and intensive care units.
In conjunction with baramundi Automate (opens in new tab)—both of which are standard tools in the baramundi Management Suite (opens in new tab)—the process of deploying software, important security updates, and patches to end devices was automated, freeing up IT resources for proactive and preventive maintenance.
