Password Security

Password Security

Password security refers to the strength and effectiveness of passwords used to protect user accounts, data, and systems. As one of the basic methods of authentication, passwords help ensure that only authorized individuals can access protected resources.

Raise awareness

IT admins can specify certain requirements for passwords such as a minimum length and the use of special characters, numbers and upper and lower case letters. Longer and more complex passwords generally provide greater protection.

IT admins can use various tools and methods to educate and remind users about the need to adhere to strong password security policies and practices.

Tools and methods for password security

Password managers help users create, store and manage strong passwords. They securely encrypt and store different passwords for each account, service or network sign-on. Users only need to remember one main password to access their stored passwords.

Two-factor authentication is an effective way to increase account security. In addition to the password, another method of confirmation is required for access, such as a one-time password via SMS, biometric authentication (e.g., fingerprint or facial recognition) or an authentication app.

Part of the IT admins’ job is to conduct regular password security audits. It’s important to identify suspicious activity or weak passwords and take appropriate corrective measures such as resetting selected passwords or blocking compromised accounts.
