Less is more: Release 2025 R1 expands Linux, network scanning and security features and retires legacy functions
Release 2025 R1 of the baramundi Management Suite adds new capabilities and enhancements based on customer requests and plans the end of older, little-used functions.
Short & sweet
- Linux Devices gets new job options and increased compatibility
- The new Network Discovery Scanner is now available in its final form
- Multi-factor authentication (MFA) enhances security and compliance
- Retirement planning for little-used legacy functions
Linux Devices – Update Check and Sleep as new job options
Linux Devices has captured a lot of attention from both IT admins and baramundi developers since its introduction in 2024 R2, especially in the area of update management. A new job step ensures that an update check can be performed without automatically triggering an update. This job accesses the end devices in read-only mode so it does not disturb normal operation. In other words, an update check can be done automatically and regularly across the entire network without affecting the performance of Linux endpoints in a production environment. Any required updates can then be carried out collectively during regular maintenance windows. This is where another new feature comes into play: The "Sleep" job step allows a precisely defined pause to be scheduled between individual jobs. This allows IT managers to precisely orchestrate their update and management processes and prevent automated processes from falling out of sync due to delays on individual devices.
Network Discovery Scanner
Following the technical preview in the last release, the final version of the new Network Discovery Scanner is now available. It contains all of the functions of the old scanner as well as some additional features. For example, it is now possible to record when a particular device first appeared in the scan. This makes it easy to filter for newly found devices. IT also no longer requires the baramundi Management Agent so segmented networks and even pure offline environments can be scanned. Scan results are then forwarded to the baramundi Suite via an export/import function. Combined with support for a range of other industry protocols, the scanner is now perfectly suited for use in secure networked production IIoT environments.
Multi Factor Authentication adds a layer of security for admin access
Already a widely used security feature for user and admin access to online systems, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) has become especially important for organizations in Europe. That’s because the EU’s stringent new NIS2 Directive cybersecurity regulations are set to take effect in October 2025. We recommend that all customers – not just those in the EU – enable the new MFA option for baramundi Suite admin access. Time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) in combination with an authenticator app such as Microsoft Authenticator ensure that only authorized persons have access to the management console.
Planting, pruning and mowing: the software lifecycle roadmap
What do landscape architects and groundskeepers have in common with software developers? A surprising amount if you think about.
Landscape designers come up with the overall plan, decide how all of the pieces fit together, and how the property will be developed and maintained over time. The grounds crew handles
needed weeding, mowing and pruning efficiently so it still has time to implement landscaping enhancements and additions.
The same idea applies to developing and maintaining enterprise software. It’s why the baramundi product team is planning to discontinue and decommission some
little-used or obsolete functions over the next few releases. Details about which features will reach End of Development (EoD), End of Service (EoS) or final End of Life
(EoL) will be published both in the release notes and on our new product
lifecycle page. Not only do we keep the Management Suite landscape looking good and working efficiently to meet customer needs, we free up team resources to expand the
capabilities of popular modules and implement advanced new features.
