Tailgating

Tailgating

“Tailgating” is when an unauthorized person gains physical access to an area or system by sneaking past or closely following an authorized person who just entered, or by surreptitiously acquiring or copying valid credentials.

There are several measures to prevent tailgating: The first step is access control systems such as electronic locks, key cards or biometric scanners that regulate access to certain areas or systems.

Surveillance cameras or motion detectors are also useful for identifying tailgating attempts. Ultimately, all employees in an organization have a responsibility to be alert and report unusual or suspicious behavior.

An appropriate incident response strategy is valuable if a tailgating incident occurs.
